Minister of Health, Professor Babatunde Osotimehin announced yesterday that Nigeria will soon exit the unenviable league of polio endemic nations as result of concerted efforts of governments at all levels.

Osotimehin who spoke  at the technical review meeting of the resolutions of the First Northern States Governors’ Forum Health Summit commended the various strategies by governors to ensure that health issues are on the front burner of national life.

He commended the Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, Dr. Aliyu Babangida who consider it fit that health issues should dominate the attention of the leadership of the country, the North in particular.

Those who attended the meeting include the Deputy Governor of Kaduna State, Dr. Patrick Yakowa and all health commissioners of the 19 northern states.

Osotimehin saluted the contributions of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Sa’ad and the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Archbishop John Onaiyekan who provide leadership for the northern traditional and religious establishments to rid the country of polio.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Aliyu Babangida said every leader in the North should be in the forefront of mobilizing the entire citizenry for better health.

He charged, “We must tell ourselves the truth about where we are, where we ought to be and what to do to get to where we should be.”
